On Tuesday, June 18th, at 11 AM, at Burbank Park, Onota Lake (256 Lakeway Drive, Pittsfield) Berkshire District Attorney Shugrue, in collaboration with the Berkshire District Attorney’s Child Fatality Review Team, Mayor Peter M. Marchetti, and multiple local towns and organizations, will host a press conference to highlight the importance of water safety during the summer months.
Drownings are the leading cause of death among children. Berkshire County has experienced multiple drowning incidents over the past year. The Berkshire District Attorney’s Child Fatality Review Team meets quarterly to evaluate cases of child fatalities that could influence changes in policies, practices, and public education. The focus of this quarter’s case was a fatality caused by drowning. Education regarding water safety can prevent drowning deaths.
District Attorney Shugrue stated, “In May the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office’s Child Fatality Review Team examined a case involving a child drowning. These deaths are 100% preventable. Education is essential to stopping these tragedies, and I am thrilled that our community is dedicating a summer to water safety.”
Mayor Peter M. Marchetti said, “Many of the summer activities that adults, children and families take part in involve water. Education and safety around water bodies, including in pools and lakes, is of upmost importance. I encourage everyone to learn how to recognize the signs of drowning, learn how to swim and to actively monitor water conditions,”
As the summer heat approaches, towns, government agencies, and community organizations across Berkshire County are launching a comprehensive water safety campaign. The press conference will serve as the kickoff event, where a series of water safety initiatives and events organized by local cities and towns will be announced. Tractor Supply has donated swimming goggles to give away in cities and towns throughout this summer’s water safety focus.
