The plea was agreed upon by the Defendant and the Commonwealth. The Honorable Judge Agostini presided over the plea.
District Attorney Shugrue stated:
Today I was honored to represent the Commonwealth in bringing Conrad Mainwaring to partial justice for the crimes he committed. I say partial justice because we know the Defendant had victims far beyond those named in today’s case who have not had the opportunity to seek justice in a court of law.
I have been humbled by the bravery of the survivors in this case. They have carried the burden of abuse without justice since the 1970s. Without the survivors, their families, and the dedication of ESPN’s investigative journalists we would not have reached this successful conclusion today. On behalf of my office, I thank them for their participation and dedication during this process.
The District Attorney added:
Child molesters are cunning, calculated criminals who prey on the most vulnerable members of our communities. The Defendant used his status as a successful athlete and position of power to abuse countless adolescent boys. Again and again, the Defendant isolated and abused victims with similar profiles, in similar manner and in similar circumstances. Without question, Conrad Mainwaring is a serial child molester.
District Attorney Shugrue concluded:
Secrecy is the ally of abusers. Conrad Mainwaring made it clear to his victims that he expected silence above all else. The courageous survivors broke their silence and united together in bringing Conrad Mainwaring to justice. In doing so, Conrad Mainwaring is finally facing the consequences for his crimes.
I want to end by thanking four key parties who were a crucial part of reaching a plea today. I am so grateful for the work of Attorney Megan Tesoniero and State Police Captain Stephen Jones. They began the work on the case during their tenure at the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. It is because of their hard work that we were able to reach this resolution today. I also want to thank journalist Mike Kessler, ESPN and journalist Mark Fainaru-Wada. Their three-year investigation and partnership with the survivors in this case was the catalyst to bringing Conrad Mainwaring to justice.
Between 1976 and 1979 Conrad Mainwaring worked at Camp Greylock for Boys, a sports camp in Berkshire County. His time at the camp directly followed his appearance at the 1976 Summer Olympics representing the country of Antigua and Barbuda in Track and Field. While working at the camp, the Defendant is confirmed to have sexually abused nine children; however, his total number of victims could be more.
ESPN originally broke the story of Mainwaring’s abuse in August 2019 following an approximately three-year investigation. Two weeks after the story broke, the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office began to investigate the allegations brought against the Defendant.
On January 27, 2021, Conrad Mainwaring was indited by a grand jury in Berkshire Superior Court on multiple counts of indecent assault and battery. (In February 2021 the Defendant was arraigned on additional counts of indecent assault and battery.)
On February 17, 2021, after pleading no contest to similar but unrelated charges in a California court, the Los Angeles Police Department apprehended Mainwaring as he left court. The Defendant was brought into custody as a fugitive from justice issued by the Commonwealth. In early March, members of the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit of the Massachusetts State Police traveled to Los Angeles and transferred Mainwaring back to Berkshire County.
The Defendant was arraigned in Berkshire Superior Court on March 16, 2021. Following the plea Conrad Mainwaring was transferred from the Berkshire House of Corrections to the custody of the State Prison system. He will serve the remaining sentence in State Prison. Should the Defendant violate his probation, he will face an additional 10 years in State Prison.
The Commonwealth was represented by District Attorney Timothy J Shugrue and Assistant District Attorney and Chief of the Child Abuse Unit Stephanie Ilberg,. Director of Victim Witness Advocate Jane Kibby-Peirce served on behalf of the District Attorney’s Office. The Massachusetts State Police were the lead law enforcement agency on the case. The Los Angeles Police Department (CA) served as a supporting law enforcement agency.
The total number of Conrad Mainwaring victims remains unknown.
